Advising and freshman formalities

Advising and freshman formalities Yep, Im officially Course 11. A few interesting things have happened this week. Thanks to a freight derailment in Idaho, I spent most of Tuesday on a bus from Montana to Washington state. Last night, my hall, Third East, had its annual faculty dinner. We cooked for various faculty and professors that wed previously invited, and a generally good time was had by all. I invited a fellow who is actually an alumnus of my hall, and he hadnt been back in the building since the early 1970s. Talk about nostalgia! This evening, my advisor invited his freshman advisees to dinner following a signing of the forms (see above). Weve had a few dinners like this throughout the year freshman advisors get money to do cool stuff like that. Weve gone out to nice places for dinner three or four times this year, and its a good way to get to know your advisors in a social setting far removed from your work. :-) In French today, we had to hold mock interviews with a classroom camarade on the French company of our choice. Last week, we were given a worksheet to fill out using data and careers information from the *French version* of the companies home pages. Everyone was so happy in class today I guess the four-day weekend helped. ;-) Ive been exploring UROP options for transportation stuff, and things are looking pretty promising for the fall. Taking an advising seminar with some of MITs more eminent transport faculty really helped, since Ive all-of-a-sudden got numerous beneficial connections, even as a freshman. For those of you coming here in the fall, be sure to read through the listing of advising seminars youll be glad you did! (Note to aspiring transportation students: my seminar isnt being offered next year, but if youre really interested in the field, drop me a line.) The weather was beautiful today.

Community For My Old Volunteer Group - 901 Words

Community for me, is feeling connected, accepted, and at home. It is where everyone is working together for a mutual cause, and having fun doing it. It is not so much a place to me, as it is a feeling. I can go to any town, city, or â€Å"community† but it does not necessarily take a place in my heart as much as the sense of community I have experienced before. What other place to find community than my old volunteer group, ironically called FOCUS on Community. FOCUS is an organization whose mission is to reach out to the people of our community, like teens and families, to prevent substance abuse, smoking, alcoholism, and even to help families that are already dealing with these issues. My favorite program was the F.A.S.T. program - Families And Schools Together- because I worked one-on-one with people and really saw that we were making a difference in these people’s lives. At the time I first volunteered for F.A.S.T. I did not realize exactly what I was doing, I merel y signed up because I wanted to help out in some way. However, I soon realized that we truly were bringing these families closer. We gave them a safe environment with dinner and activities, and a chance every week to have one-on-one time with the child of their choice. This helped them solve arguments and build stronger and closer relationships with children who are having a rough time. Another place where I felt an immense sense of community was Italian Fest. Marital Rape And Spousal Rape - 1552 Words

Childs 1 Marc Childs Professor Sherene Jensen Sociology 100 16 November 2014 Marital Rape Marital rape, or spousal rape, had been an exceedingly controversial and touchy subject in the United States since the first feminist movement in the 1960s. In this paper, marital rape and spousal rape will be used interchangeably. One of the many challenges in addressing the topic of marital rape, is defining what behaviors should be considered rape. Rape is defined as the unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse (Dictionary.com). The legal definition of marital rape, however, differs within the United States. Nevertheless, marital rape can generally be defined as any non-consensual interaction or penetration (vaginal, anal, and/or oral) obtained by force, violence, duress, menace, or fear of immediate and unlawful bodily injury on the person or another (Cal Pen Code  § 262). Most research having to do with marital rape has included couples who are legally married, separated, divorced or cohabiting with the understanding th at the dynamics of sexual violence in a long-term cohabiting relationship are similar to those of a married couple (Mahoney and Williams, 1998). Currently, there has been no study of marital rape that has included married or cohabiting gay or lesbian couples. Dry. Genera Bole As Americans we strongly believe in having the right to do what we please. After all, this is a free country. We will write a custom essay sample on America or any similar topic only for you Order Now So if we want to smoke around our kids, build a fast food diet, or Just be plain lazy we can go right ahead and do it and who will tell us otherwise? No one. We can continue to slowly kill ourselves through all of our bad habits and ignorance in health and then pass on this gift onto our children. Something needs be done soon before it is too. Americans should take better care of their health by developing better eating habits, focusing on future health issues, and y not being so lazy. It is no secret that America is look at as a fat country. If other countries were to compare themselves with us they might represent the USA with a big McDonald’s symbol or something similar. And for good reason. With fast food being so convenient and Just about anywhere it is so easy to a busy American to Just use that drive though and the Burger King and pick up some food. There is no second guessing something easy that tastes good. Say an American doesn’t eat so much fast food and shops for themselves. Just look at the prices of Junk or processed food in comparison to organic and healthier food. How can it be possible to sell something with added chemicals cheaper than something off the earth? According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (KIDDUSH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States over the past 20 years . Similarly, in 1990, no state had obesity rates higher than 15%. By 2005, only 6 states had an obesity rate less than 20%. Obesity has been directly linked to hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and depression. Each year, over 300,000 adults in the U. S. Will die from obesity related causes. Minefield, Charles E, Peeved profile; Dotty, Nicole, MPH; Fletcher, Autumn, PhD, APRON, CUFF-BC. BAND Journal. 3 (Summer 2008): 83-8. Although It is understandable that lower income families don’t have the funds to buy all the organic food. In 2011, the low-income threshold for a family of four with two children was $45,622. Between 2007 and 2011, the share of working families who are low income increased from 28 percent to 32. 1 percent (Annie e. Casey 2014). In 2011, the top 20 percent of working families received 10. 1 times the total income received by the bottom 20 percent of working families, up room 9. 5 in 2007. The same goes for busy families who are Just looking to eat whatever is easiest. Is America targeting certain families? Is there more money in junk than in organic food? Or is it Just the ignorance of a people not concerned about future health. Issues in health later on in the future seem to be at the bottom of the charts when it comes to what Americans worry about. It is all about the here and now that’s important. That is until someone comes down with a life altering health issue. â€Å"We cannot treat our way out of the cancer problem,†. New cancer cases will rise from an estimated 14 million annually in 2012 to 22 million within two decades. Over the same period, cancer deaths are predicted to rise from 8. Million a year to 13 million â€Å"More commitment to prevention and early detection is desperately needed in order to complement improved treatments and address the alarming rise in cancer burden globally. † By Tim Hum and Jean Christensen, CNN Feb. (2014). It seems as though the only time health is important is when life is at stake. The crazy thing is, life was at stake and being damaged from the day any harmful substanc e was consumed or a bad habit was formed. Today’s youth has a mindset of live fast die young but it is not entirely their fault for having this thought process. It’s the fault of the generation before them. Our youths parents or anyone who the they look up to is to blame because chances are that generation had bad health habits and passed it down whether they knew it or not. Today’s children have lost the ability to pretend and imagine. This is most definitely to no fault of their own. Children do not have to create their own fantasy worlds because they have an pad, a big screen TV or a WI to do it for them. Taylor Finn, Iowa State Daily (2014). What we do know will affect us later on in life and in some cases might even effect someone else. Forming unhealthy habits doesn’t stop at diet choice, ignorance, or lack of caring. Finding an easier way for things causes a bigger issue. And that issue is Laziness. Too much of our lives too easy. In fact, everything is made to be easier or shrouded with the word â€Å"convenience†. Americans can Just go to a drive through for food or even order food and there is no need to even get out of the house. Media has taken over the life of Americans as well. Americans of all ages these days cannot stray too ar away from their home for fear of their smart phone dying or there not being any Wi-If. Youth spend their days behind tablets, televisions, and smart phones rather than using imagination outside or being active. Videotapes can be looked at as a way to pass the time but for our youth it could possibly be causing them to be desensitizing to the world and can hinder their ability to use their own imagination for entertainment. America is focused on the easy way out of things rather than taking the time out to educate themselves about lifestyle, diet, and exercise. If it squires activity outside of the normal sedentary house life it is almost shunned and thought of as nonsense. Without the will to understand and learn about what a good diet is, how to make changes to avoid future health issues, and how to get away from the normal lazy lifestyle America will continue its downward spiral in to cancers, a poisoned youth, and obesity. Simple things like looking at the ingredients of food normally consumed, or getting out once in while Just walk for a half hour can be enough to chance a lifestyle. We as Americans need to find a way for lower income families to be able to arches food healthier to themselves and more importantly their kids. Many families are very busy and have no time to think of the issues of grab and go foods and should consider creating a plan to eat better while on the move. Most important is America’s youth. Higher intake of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with increased IBM and considered a contributing factor of childhood obesity. From 1989 to 2008, there has been a significant increase in total per capita consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, from 130 to 212 collieries (kcal) per day, in children 6- 1 years of age. Placing an emphasis on reducing the empty energy intake from sugar-sweetened beverages and increasing the intake of nutrient-dense beverages, such as low-fat milk, is an essential component to decreasing the prevalence of obesity in children. Higher levels of education and positive parental behaviors, such as parent support and limiting weekly fast-food intake, are associated with lower intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages. Current Opinion in Endocrinology Diabetes and Obesity (2013) Why should our youth suffer from the actions of the current enervation when simple changes can make a difference In our future. Helping A Child Develop Growth Mindset Essay Example For Students

Helping A Child Develop Growth Mindset Essay A person’s beliefs about their own abilities and skills can contribute to the person’s overall behavior pattern along with forecasting their success later in life. So it is important for a person to have a growth mindset to better themselves throughout their schooling and life. To understand how to help a child develop growth mindset, I need to discuss what a fixed mindset is so we can avoid encouraging that stagnant mindset. A fixed mindset is where the person believes that their intelligence is static. If a teacher continuously told a student that they were bad at reading then the child will continuous think that they are bad at reading, which will turn to loathe towards reading. Having taken up the fixed performance narrative, we tend to live into it, becoming the character with the fatal flaw (Johnston, 2012, p.15). These children who believe that learning is fixed will believe that they will not grow as a learner no matter how hard they try. Unfortunately, this is how many children in feel in the classroom due to the teacher’s choice of feedback. A lot of times when teachers walk around the room to check on their student’s progress, they often say, â€Å"good girl† â€Å"good job† or â€Å"perfect† which implies that the student’s efforts were good enough. This gives the students a fixed mindset that they are good at they particular skills. Often this would translate to the student not trying harder anymore. Not only do children who adopt a fixed mindset become helpless when they encounter failure, then when they face problems that they had previously solved, they believe they might not be able to solve them a second time and, indeed, they don’t do as well as they did previously (Johnston, 2012, p.15). This fixed mindset can lead to probl. .rten class I am working with now has been creating pages in their Jazzy Journal since the beginning of the school year. Each student has their own journal with writing and drawing assignments. This way the student can see their progress. The teacher and student can also see how far they’ve come in their writing by looking over the pages in their Jazzy Journal. This would show the student that their learning process, and knowledge is always evolving. We as teachers are role models for our students so when it comes to teaching we need to be aware that our choices impact our students’ mindset. Therefore, we need to we need to make sure to help our students mind’s and hearts flourish to the best of our abilities. We need to make sure that children don’t get suck in a fixed mindset and instead we need to find ways to foster a growth mindset to help our students succeed.

The Genres of My Life Essay Example For Students

The Genres of My Life Essay Alarm blaring, I roll over to find my phone. I’ve hit snooze about three times already; if I don’t get up now I’ll be late for class. I question what state of mind I must have been in to sign up for an 8:00 AM and two classes immediately following it. I find my phone, turn off my alarm and begin to look at what all I had missed during the whole six hours I was asleep. There’s always something; the online world never sleeps. I check everything: my messages, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and even my emails. We will write a custom essay on The Genres of My Life specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now This won’t be the last time though; I’ll check them all over again in about an hour and then several more times within the hours to follow. As awful as it is, I’m always on my phone. It’s such a great way to stay in touch with people, and it makes so many different genres of communication available to me. I roll out of bed, run a brush through my hair, brush my teeth and try to put a little makeup on. I see that I have two new text messages from my boyfriend that lives in Orlando. I quickly respond to his text saying, â€Å"Good morning!!! As I walk out the door for my first class at approximately 7:48 AM, I text my close friend who is in it with me. I let her know that I’m on my way to her dorm. Then, about one hundred feet from her building I’ll text her again letting her know that I’ve arrived. As early as it is, I’ve already used one genre of communication: text messaging. This is easily the most common form of communication used by people who are not physically with each other. It is possible that a genre has sub-genres within itself. For example, my boyfriend and I being long distance, our relationship depends heavily on texting. Since we’re so comfortable texting each other, the way I text him is a lot different than how I text other people. We have very casual conversations. With him, I may abbreviate words and not worry much about my grammar or sentence structure. This is much different than how I’d text a classmate or someone else I was less familiar with. For them, I would be a lot more formal. I would be careful with the words that I choose and make sure to use proper grammar. Before sending the text I would reread it to make sure that no mistakes were made. Surprisingly, my friend and I manage to get to class a few minutes early. We find seats in the large lecture hall and sit down. I pull out my phone and, as I said I would, go through and check my social media to pass the time, as if I missed something since I last checked each of them forty-five minutes ago. I open twitter and scroll through the new tweets. I see that someone has tweeted â€Å"Why did I sign up for an 8:00 AM again? † I laugh to myself because I remember thinking the exact same thing this morning. I retweet their tweet and continue scrolling. Although twitter isn’t often thought of as a form of communication, it is a great way to connect with people. For me, it’s how I stay connected with everyone I went to high school with. You can tell by their tweets how they’re doing and what they’re up to. It’s an easy way to stay updated about people’s lives without actually having to stay in constant contact with them. Class starts, so I put away my phone and begin to take notes. However, it isn’t long until my ADD kicks in and I find it impossible to pay attention. I take my phone back out and check Instagram. I look through the pictures posted within the last twelve hours and see that there was a lot going on last night. I see that Kappa Sigma had a date function last night and my friend dressed like a jogger, another friend got thrown in the fountain for her birthday, and I see Kim Kardashian’s latest selfie. Instagram is where people post memorable pictures for their followers to see. Again, the people I follow are mostly people from high school. It’s another way to stay updated with what everyone is doing, but in the form of pictures. Class comes to an end. I pack up my stuff and head off to what will be my second class of the day. The class is just across the street from where my first one was so I get there with plenty of time to spare. .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 , .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .postImageUrl , .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 , .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:hover , .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:visited , .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:active { border:0!important; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:active , .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11 .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u818cecf91f1f96b1ccb8cb29a0f0eb11:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Media Violence And Its Effects On Children EssayI find a seat and get out my phone for the fourth time today. This time I open Snapchat. This app allows people to communicate using pictures and videos. Once you take it, you can choose to either add a caption or draw on your picture or video. This allows people to communicate in a fun and creative way. The app also allows everyone to have a â€Å"snapstory† where they can post these pictures and videos. The coolest thing about Snapchat is that each picture and video only stays on a person’s snapstory for twenty-four hours. After that, it erases and can no longer be seen, but until then people can watch the sna p-stories as much as they want. Snapchat is a newer form of social media and probably my favorite. It makes it possible for people to capture moments of their day and share them with all of their friends. I can see pictures that people post from parties or I can literally watch a video of my friend getting thrown in the Westcott fountain because it was her birthday. About the same time that I’ve run out of snap-stories to watch, it is time for my next class to begin. I find this class more interesting than my last, so I manage to keep my phone away for most of it. It isn’t until the break in between this class and my next that I pull it out again. Now I go on Facebook. Facebook was one of the original forms of social media. Facebook was more popular for my age group back when I was in middle school, but it is still widely used today. I scroll through my feed and see tons of status updates, shared articles and pictures posted by practically everyone I’ve ever known. I don’t do much posting on this website but I do enjoy seeing what old friends are up to by looking through their most recent pictures. Unlike Instagram, people post multiple pictures at a time. And unlike Snapchat, the pictures and videos do not get taken down after twenty-four hours. For me, Facebook is the way I stay in touch with family for the most part. I love seeing videos of my little cousin Annabelle as she grows each month, hearing about the snowfall from my family up North and seeing status updates from my cousin and her husband who are living in Turkey for two years while they teach students English and travel around Europe during their time off. After the shooting at the Strozier Library, I immediately posted a status that let all of my family and friends know that I was safe after the tragic incident. Facebook is a genre that makes communicating with a large number of people extremely easy. With time still left to spare, I realize that I’ve run out of social media sites to check. I then see that I have thirteen new emails. I open them and see ten emails from various stores and websites. I also see an email from my Statistics professor letting us know that class has been cancelled for the following day, an email from my dad asking for the information on the apartment I plan on living in next year and an email from my dentist reminding me of my appointment coming up later in the week. Although I rarely use this form of communication, it is a good way to get in touch with my parents while they’re at work. It is an even better way to communicate with my professors, other than face-to-face interaction. Like text messaging, there are different sub-genres of emailing. If I am emailing my father about something while he is at work, I will make it short and simply state the question that I must ask him. Whereas emailing a professor, I will start with a greeting and be more detailed with what I am saying. .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d , .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .postImageUrl , .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d , .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:hover , .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:visited , .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:active { border:0!important; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:active , .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u714ff6e1bb4ca3c9ee20c27c5f8e493d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Internet it's effects in our lives and the future EssayI will use proper grammar and sentence structure also. Once I’ve finished with what I need to say I will thank them for their time and write my full name at the bottom of the email. I will take the time to proofread the email before I send it as well. Emails, although not as popular as they were in earlier years, are an excellent way to communicate with people over the Internet. Finally, as my last class of the day begins, I put away my phone. This class is smaller and more interactive, so I’ll have to stay off of it the entire time. For this class I use a completely different, and easily the most important, form of communication: face-to-face conversation. This is one of the most undervalued forms of communication. I sit and listen to my professor talk about what all we’re going to do with our time in class today. After, she breaks us up into groups so we can evaluate a short story and answer follow up questions. After reading to ourselves, my group members and I begin discussing what we’ve just read. The way I talk to my group members is different than how I’d talk to other people. I talk to them in a much more formal manner since this is the first time I’ve talked to most of them. I will put more thought into the words I say and our conversation will pertain to what we’ve just read. This is different than how I’d talk to a friend. With them, the conversation would be more casual and I would be more comfortable saying the first thing that comes to my mind. Also, the conversation wouldn’t be contained to one specific subject. Each group wraps up their discussion and we briefly talk as a class. Time runs out and we’re told by our professor to have a good weekend. As I step out of the classroom, I get a phone call from my mom. She’s on her lunch break and just wanted to check in. We talk about how my classes are going and how I’m doing money wise. She also catches me up on things that are going on at home: my little sister just made the varsity softball team as a freshman and my other sister just got her first job. Like texting and emails, the way I talk to my mom is completely different than how I talk on the phone with my boyfriend. And even that is completely different than how I’d talk to someone I wasn’t close with, like an employer. With my boyfriend, our phone conversations are very casual. I’ll call him periodically throughout the day to ask him something or just to check in if I’m lonely or bored. Our conversations are very scattered. A lot of times I interrupt him because I think of something that I’d been meaning to ask him for a while. If I were to do that to my mother she would drive up to Tallahassee just to yell at me. The way I would talk to an employer is also a lot different than my phone conversations with both my mom and my boyfriend. With an employer, I would figure out what I was going to say before I call. I might even write it down. I would be extremely cordial and polite. Before hanging up I would thank them for their time and possibly answering a question I had asked. And I most definitely would not end the call with â€Å"I love you. † As I hang up the phone with my mom, I think about my day. I’ve been up for a total of four hours and have already used eight different genres of communication. Each one is unique, but serves the same purpose: to connect me with the people in my life.

Cry, The Beloved Country Essays - English-language Films, Cry Cry, The Beloved Country The book Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton is a book about agitation and turmoil of both whites and blacks over the white segregation policy called apartheid. The book describes how understanding between whites and blacks can end mutual fear and aggresion, and bring reform and hope to a small community of Ndotcheni as well as to South Africa as a whole. The language of the book reflects the Bible; furthermore, several characters and episodes are reminiscent of stories from the New Testament and teachings of Christ. Thus, Alan Paton, as a reformer and the author of Cry, the Beloved Country, gives the people of South Africa a new, modern Bible, where he, like Christ, teaches to love thy brother as yourself in order to help whites and blacks overcome the fear and misunderstanding of each other. The language of the book from the very beginning reveals its biblical nature. The great valley of Umzimkulu is still in darkness, but the light will come there. Ndotcheni is still in darkness, but the light will come there also. The style includes symbols such as light and darkness, short clauses connected by and or but, and repetition. This style is used to represent speech or thoughts translated from Zulu. Jesus Christ is symbolized by the figure of Arthur Jarvis. He is a white reformer who fights for rights of blacks. Like Christ, he is very altruistic and wants to pursue his aims at all costs. His friend, Harrison, says: Here [Arthur Jarvis] was, day to day, on a kind of mission. (173) Arthur Jarvis and his wife Mary agree that it's more important to speak the truth than to make money. (172) Arthur Jarvis is killed in his house by Absalom, a black youth who gets entangled in crime. Absalom only intends to rob Arthur Jarvis, and the homicide is unintentional. Absalom thinks that Arthur Jarvis is out and comes into the house with two friends. However, when Arthur Jarvis heard a noise, and came down to investigate (186). Startled and afraid, Absalom fires blindly. Absalom later says in court: Then a white man came into the passage I was frightened. I fired the revolver. (194) Absalom's blind fear is symbolic of the fear, blindness, and misunderstanding between whites and blacks; these a re the reasons of racial hatred. In his room, there are pictures of Christ crucified and Abraham Lincoln (176), the two men who fought for human love and compassion and were killed because of their beliefs. Arthur Jarvis can be identified with Jesus Christ. Jesus taught love thy neighbor as thyself. Roman priests didn't understand him, but they felt his power and were afraid of him. Even though Christ taught compassion, they claimed he would incite a riot and crucified him. Like Christ, Arthur Jarvis teaches compassion and love between neighbors - whites and blacks, separated by the policy of apartheid. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ leads to redemption, spiritual growth of many people and progress; likewise, the death of Arthur Jarvis brings reform and hope. Ironically, the tragedy brings together Stephen Kumalo, the father of a black murderer and Jarvis, the father of Arthur Jarvis, the white victim. High Place where Jarvis lives is symbolic of an elevated position of many whites. Before his son's death, Jarvis is on the hilltop, thinking in a distant, uninvolved way about the problems between whites and blacks, seeing just the white point of view. Indeed they talked about [the erosion of land] often, for when they visited one another and sat on the long cool verandahs drinking their tea, they must needs look out over the barren valleys and the bare hills that were stretched below them. Some of their labor was drawn from Ndotcheni, and they knew how year by year there was less food grown in these reserves. (162) Jarvis is not a bad person but is ignorant about the lives of blacks and the real issues that take place. After the death of his son Jarvis learns to view blacks as real people. Jarvis reads his son's papers and suddenly becomes concerned with the ideas expressed by his son and by Abraham Lincoln. Jarvis sat, deeply moved
