Community For My Old Volunteer Group - 901 Words

Community for me, is feeling connected, accepted, and at home. It is where everyone is working together for a mutual cause, and having fun doing it. It is not so much a place to me, as it is a feeling. I can go to any town, city, or â€Å"community† but it does not necessarily take a place in my heart as much as the sense of community I have experienced before. What other place to find community than my old volunteer group, ironically called FOCUS on Community. FOCUS is an organization whose mission is to reach out to the people of our community, like teens and families, to prevent substance abuse, smoking, alcoholism, and even to help families that are already dealing with these issues. My favorite program was the F.A.S.T. program - Families And Schools Together- because I worked one-on-one with people and really saw that we were making a difference in these people’s lives. At the time I first volunteered for F.A.S.T. I did not realize exactly what I was doing, I merel y signed up because I wanted to help out in some way. However, I soon realized that we truly were bringing these families closer. We gave them a safe environment with dinner and activities, and a chance every week to have one-on-one time with the child of their choice. This helped them solve arguments and build stronger and closer relationships with children who are having a rough time. Another place where I felt an immense sense of community was Italian Fest. And for good reason. With fast food being so convenient and Just about anywhere it is so easy to a busy American to Just use that drive though and the Burger King and pick up some food. Just look at the prices of Junk or processed food in comparison to organic and healthier food. How can it be possible to sell something with added chemicals cheaper than something off the earth? Youth spend their days behind tablets, televisions, and smart phones rather than using imagination outside or being active. Videotapes can be looked at as a way to pass the time but for our youth it could possibly be causing them to be desensitizing to the world and can hinder their ability to use their own imagination for entertainment. America is focused on the easy way out of things rather than taking the time out to educate themselves about lifestyle, diet, and exercise. If it squires activity outside of the normal sedentary house life it is almost shunned and thought of as nonsense. Without the will to understand and learn about what a good diet is, how to make changes to avoid future health issues, and how to get away from the normal lazy lifestyle America will continue its downward spiral in to cancers, a poisoned youth, and obesity. Simple things like looking at the ingredients of food normally consumed, or getting out once in while Just walk for a half hour can be enough to chance a lifestyle. We as Americans need to find a way for lower income families to be able to arches food healthier to themselves and more importantly their kids. Many families are very busy and have no time to think of the issues of grab and go foods and should consider creating a plan to eat better while on the move. Most important is America’s youth. Helping A Child Develop Growth Mindset Essay A person’s beliefs about their own abilities and skills can contribute to the person’s overall behavior pattern along with forecasting their success later in life. So it is important for a person to have a growth mindset to better themselves throughout their schooling and life. To understand how to help a child develop growth mindset, I need to discuss what a fixed mindset is so we can avoid encouraging that stagnant mindset. A fixed mindset is where the person believes that their intelligence is static. If a teacher continuously told a student that they were bad at reading then the child will continuous think that they are bad at reading, which will turn to loathe towards reading. Having taken up the fixed performance narrative, we tend to live into it, becoming the character with the fatal flaw (Johnston, 2012, p.15). These children who believe that learning is fixed will believe that they will not grow as a learner no matter how hard they try. Unfortunately, this is how many children in feel in the classroom due to the teacher’s choice of feedback. A lot of times when teachers walk around the room to check on their student’s progress, they often say, â€Å"good girl† â€Å"good job† or â€Å"perfect† which implies that the student’s efforts were good enough. This gives the students a fixed mindset that they are good at they particular skills. Often this would translate to the student not trying harder anymore. Not only do children who adopt a fixed mindset become helpless when they encounter failure, then when they face problems that they had previously solved, they believe they might not be able to solve them a second time and, indeed, they don’t do as well as they did previously (Johnston, 2012, p.15). This fixed mindset can lead to probl. .rten class I am working with now has been creating pages in their Jazzy Journal since the beginning of the school year. Each student has their own journal with writing and drawing assignments. This way the student can see their progress. The teacher and student can also see how far they’ve come in their writing by looking over the pages in their Jazzy Journal. This would show the student that their learning process, and knowledge is always evolving.We as teachers are role models for our students so when it comes to teaching we need to be aware that our choices impact our students’ mindset. Therefore, we need to we need to make sure to help our students mind’s and hearts flourish to the best of our abilities. We need to make sure that children don’t get suck in a fixed mindset and instead we need to find ways to foster a growth mindset to help our students succeed.
